Foundation Patrons and Trustees were in attendance at the 2023 Olivier Awards and celebrated the first winner of the newly renamed Gillian Lynne Award for Best Theatre Choreographer - won by Matt Cole for his spectacular work on Disney’s Newsies at Troubadour Wembley Park Theatre.

Darcey Bussell, Matthew Bourne, Harriet Thorpe, Hugh Quarshie, Daniel Ross, Luke Rittner, and Peter Land were at the Royal Albert Hall to enjoy and celebrate the renaming of the prestigious award. It was a special evening with Foundation Patrons Hannah Waddingham hosting the Awards and Matthew Bourne on stage to present the Gillian Lynne Award to Matt Cole.

Matt Cole was thrilled and said receiving the “Dame Gillian Lynne award for Best Theatre Choreographer has such added meaning having worked for her as dancer in Cats. She taught me about passion, precision and the pursuit for excellence.”

Based on a true story, Newsies is set in New York City at the turn of the 19th century. It’s the rousing tale of a ragged band of teenage newspaper sellers who dream of a better life far from the hardship of the street. The Newsies cast delighted the audience at the Royal Albert Hall by performing an exciting and energetic medley of numbers from the show. ‍
